Dear Molly,
This
semester I am in a technical and professional communications class. I am very
excited for this class and wanted to share a little of what I have learned
about it with you. I know that you are interested in this field of study, and
that you would like to know more about it.
Professional
communication is all the ways that you communicate with other people in a professional
setting. It can be done in several different ways such as speaking directly, in
various forms of writing such as email, memo, text, etc. It can also be done
through listening and responding to the messages you have received. We use
professional communication all the time, whether it be at school when
communicating with our teachers by asking them questions in class, or sending
them emails outside of class. We use it
at work when going through interview processes, communicating with our bosses,
and fellow employees.
The technical aspect of technical
and professional communication comes into play whenever we are using a source
of technology to do the communicating. Because technology is ever increasing,
so are the ways to communicate with technology. We can use email and text
messaging, but there is also so much communication happening through all
different forms of social media, apps, and websites. A huge advantage to technical communication
is how easy it is to access it, and because of that it is very important to
make sure that the information you are conveying is correct and understandable
for your desired audience. We do that through communicating professionally.
Like I have stated, professional
communication is how you communicate on a professional level, and technical
communication is the means you communicate through. It is important to do so in
a clear, and easy to understand manner, to help improve the quality of your
communication with others. You need to pay attention to small things such as
grammar and spelling. Proof reading is essential to good technical and
professional communication.
I hope what I have shared has
helped you to understand a little more about this topic, and may have helped
you to want to take a class like this sometime in the future as you start to think
about what kind of classes you would like to take when you attend Utah State
this spring. I am very excited to have you here at school and hope that we
might be able to discuss this more the next time I see you.

I really liked how you separated out technical and professional. I did this too and it seems to help with the understanding of it. I really liked the definition of Technical is the means with which we communicate and professional is at a professional level. I never really thought of Technical being part of the technology section of communication, but it makes perfect sense.
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoyed that you separated technical and professional communication was very effective. Although they go hand in hand, they are different and important in their own ways. I also really love how you said we are using professional communication everyday. Each person needs to know how to communicate effectively and professionally, not just communication majors. I thought this was very well written.
ReplyDeleteKarlee, I like how you described how professional communication is already is our lives. Thinking of it this way makes it less scary and intimidating! Your summary, "professional communication is how you communicate on a professional level, and technical communication is the means you communicate through" was perfect. That hit home for me, and I really appreciate your perspective. Nice insight!
